    Background HMAS Sydney. HMAS Sydney was one of three "Modified Leander" or "Perth" class light cruisers of the RAN. [2] Built for the Royal Navy, the cruiser was purchased by the Australian government to replace HMAS Brisbane, and was commissioned into the RAN in September [3] The cruiser was feet 4 inches ( m) long, and displaced 8, long tons (9, t).
