Catawba Cliffs was developed in by the J. H. Bellows Company, but there had been numerous summer cottages here for many years before that. Notes for WILLIAM ARMSTRONG: In the January addendum to her book, "Armstrongs of the Catawba," Norma Cansler writes that William Armstrong emigrated through Colonial Pennsylvania in on his way to Colonial Virginia to buy land.
The title of Mrs. Cansler's book refers to Catawba Creek which runs northeast through what is now Boutetourt. At least four generations of Armstrongs lived in Mercer genealogy was ably documented in by the late Norma Todd Cansler in her book, "Armstrongs of the Catawba."Many family members moved on to other states after the Civil War, and there are no known descendants named Armstrong living in Mercer County at this time.
